Shillong is blessed with one of the few natural golf courses in the Asian continent. The Shillong Golf course is famous the world over and is known as the “Gleneagles of the East”. One of the most prominent British legacies in North East India, the present day 18-hole layout as designed by Capt. Jackson and C.K Rhodes in 1924.
It is not only a golf course but a popular picnic spot for family and friends. The Golf course is Shillong’s favourite playground. It is about the only public place in Shillong without walls and fences. The place is seldom empty. Golfers are found practising their shots early in the morning and local children and young boys playing football in one of the lawns. There is no restriction to enter the course as it is a public property which is a rare case as most golf courses are private properties. The weekends and holidays attract maximum crowd.
The course has stunning landscape surrounded by pine trees and conifers. Its undulating valley is covered with thick groves of pine trees and rhododendron trees. The vast expanse of open space is ideal for children to play and make merry. It is not unusual to find visitors loitering around the course for hours and getting lost in the vast open space mesmerise by the course’s natural beauty.
The golf club house at one end of the course was built in British style and is an added attraction for tourist and visitors. The course is not far from Polo main market and Polo Towers which is one of Shillong’s popular hotels. It is also easily connected by local taxis and buses.
