Shillong is home to one of India’s most popular Museum. The Bon Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures (DBCIC) located at Mawlai runs the famous Don Bosco Museum. The Don Bosco Museum had featured among the top 10 museums in India and the best 25 museums in Asia for 2016. 

The centre is not far from the main GS Road. The building of the museum is seven storied tall structure. The tall majestic building has a hexagonal shape with the top rising to form a flame. The architectural layout is itself a wonder to behold. A skywalk was added to the terrace which offers guest and visitors a 360-degree view of Shillong city.  The experience is overwhelming.

The museum mirrors the varied and diverse cultures of North East India. The seven floors of the museum is said to represent the seven states of North East India. Each floor has segregated theme based galleries covering different aspect of traditional technology, ethnic religion, hunting and gathering practices of North East tribal communities and tribal land. Some of the displays at the museum are tribal basketry, musical instruments, costumes and jewellery, weapons and photographic representation of tribal life and culture. There are seventeen galleries displaying cultural artefacts, paintings and other tribal artefacts. A souvenir shop selling tribal artefacts is located at the entrance of the museum.

The centre is also a research study and has a publication section. It not only attracts tourists but also researchers and anthropologists from different parts of the world. The centre is equipped with a specialised library, a media hall and conference hall. It is a popular study tour for school children from different places of Meghalaya and the region.

The museum is opened from Monday to Saturday with timing from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm during summer and from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm in winter. A tour of Shillong is incomplete with visiting the Centre. Local taxis and buses are easily available from downtown Shillong for a visit to the Museum
