Mawlynnong village is one of the few places that have catapulted Meghalaya in the tourist map of the world. It all started when this obscure village was declared the cleanest village in Asia in 2003 and the cleanest village in India in 2005. There was no looking back since then. Located about 90 km from the capital city of Shillong, Mawlynnong has acquired a brand that is simply difficult to resist. It attracts hundreds of travellers and visitors both domestic and international on any given day.
Often referred to as Gods own paradise, Mawlynnong is an eco-tourist place that is community led. The success of the endeavour is remarkable and the experience after visiting the place is difficult to describe. The inhabitants are very conscious of cleanliness. Every house in the village and alley is clean to the bone. Flowers, wild orchids and plants of different variety fill every nook and corner of the village.
Travellers planning to halt for the night can plan out the itinerary accordingly. There is trekking to the nearby Living root bridge or spent time at the nearby waterfall which is absolutely beautiful. There is a bamboo made Guest house for those wishing to experience tradition and village way of life. The village is self sufficient as most of its requirements are found from the forest and nearby rivers and streams. There are shacks where fresh local food is provided and home-stay is an option for those wishing to spend time with the village folks. A tree house in the village offers a breathtaking view of the plains of Bangladesh.
