Dawki is a border town located in Jaintia Hill district of Meghalaya. It is about 85 km from Shillong. It is the most secluded tourist spot of Meghalaya. A trip to Dawki is an experience that is hard to forget. The sublime and refreshing Umngot River meanders its way to Dawki where its calm water offers the perfect place for fishing, waters sports, and camping. Anglers from far off places halt at Dawki for days on end. The pleasant and warm weather is a wonderful change for the people of Shillong and other interiors of Khasi Hills. It is no surprise that Dawki has always been a favorite picnic spot for the people of Meghalaya.
The young generation is the more enterprising. During the winter season, the flow and volume of the river are low revealing the spectacular beaches along the river shore. These beaches have become favorite camping spot for the young people of shilling and another place. Local boats ferry camper to the other side of the river. Visitors a camp anywhere along the river. The beach is clean and sand brittle and shiny. Food and water can be arranged by negotiating with the local shops. For travelers from outside Meghalaya taxis and buses are available from Shillong for a day-long tour of Dawki.
